Srinagar is the summer capital of Kashmir. It is situated on banks of the river Jhelum, stands on an elevation of 1585 mts and covers an area of approx. (114 sq mi). The word Srinagar is the collection of two words “Sri” meaning venerable and “nagar” meaning city. It is believed that city of Srinagar was founded by the Pandavan king Praverasena2 many centuries ago approx. in 3rd B.C but there is a clash with this theory because some historians believe that it was the Mauryan king Ashoka who founded Srinagar city which eventually fell in the rule of many kingdoms like mughal kingdom, mauryan kingdom, kushana kingdom it was also ruled by Durranis, Dogra’s and Sikhs. Srinagar is known for its unique culture and traditions which makes it completely different from the rest of the country and therefore attracts a heavy tourist attention towards itself. Srinagar is also famous for its scenic beauty which makes it a most sought after place .It is so beautiful that it is also referred as the “Switzerland of India”. Apart from its beauty Srinagar is world famous for its houseboats, dryfruits, clothes, shawls etc.
